Studies in Financial Planning*
Students in the Financial Planning concentration in the Department of Agricultural and Consumer Economics study finance and economics as they apply to individuals, households, and small businesses in the course of accumulating and using financial resources. Students are introduced to issues of credit management, insurance and other risk management strategies, saving and investing, retirement planning, and estate planning. They also study the financial marketplace as it relates to the needs of households and small businesses.
Career Opportunities
Students prepare for positions in insurance, financial planning, and wealth management services, private or nonprofit financial advising and counseling services, credit assessment and management agencies, commercial and private banking, and financial consulting. Some of these positions, such as Certified Financial PlannersTM, insurance underwriters, and other designations, call for further education to obtain credentials. Internships held during the college years can be important stepping-stones towards a career in the financial planning sector.
Nationally prominent companies in this area seeking both interns as well as well-trained graduates include State Farm Insurance, Prudential Financial Companies, Northwestern Mutual Financial Network, and Ameriprise Financial. In addition, positions are available with fee-only financial planning firms, insurance brokerages, mortgage brokers, consumer protection agencies, and consumer credit counseling bureaus. Among the job titles common in the field are Certified Financial PlannerTM, Insurance Agent, Broker, Claims Agent, or Underwriter, Personal or Commercial banker, Investment Advisor, Credit Counselor, or Consumer Investigator.
