Department of Agricultural and Consumer Economics

Undergraduate Program - Agricultural Accounting

Studies in Agricultural Accounting*

Students in the Agricultural Accounting concentration in the Department of Agricultural and Consumer Economics complete a comprehensive program that enables them to apply accounting principles in production, processing, or retailing sectors of the agriculture and food industry. The program is highly structured but offers many opportunities when completed. For example, students may complete additional and elective course work in accounting to prepare them for the Certified Management Accountant (CMA) examination.

Career Opportunities

Graduates have expertise in accounting with an understanding of the agribusiness sector. Many work in industry as managerial accountants and consultants.

One student was intrigued by the Agricultural Accounting option as soon as she heard about it. She transferred from the College of Business into the Department of Agricultural and Consumer Economics because it had everything she wanted while she sought skills in business and accounting, she had a keen interest in the food sector. Upon graduation from the University of Illinois, she accepted a job with Cargill's Accounting Management Development Program and she took the Certified Managerial Accountant qualifying examination. "I feel as if I have a head start on my job I have the accounting skills that are a requirement for the job, but I also have the courses in agriculture that relate directly to what I'll be doing at Cargill," she said. "I finished my senior year with courses in grain marketing, pricing and international trade plus a course in Asian studies. It was exciting to take those courses knowing I would soon put the knowledge to work!"
